About Skoot

Answers to common questions about using Skoot, completing a private vehicle sale, payment, pricing, identity verification, documents and support.

Skoot helps private buyers and sellers complete a vehicle sale safely, clearly and with less risk around payment.

It is for people who have already agreed, or are close to agreeing, a private sale for a car, motorbike or motorhome.

Instead of relying only on messages, a bank transfer and paperwork arranged at handover, Skoot gives both sides a clear process to follow. The buyer and seller verify their identity, the buyer transfers payment to Skoot before collection day, the seller is told once the money is with Skoot, and both parties receive transaction documents when the sale completes.

Skoot does not help you find a car, buyer or seller. It helps you complete the sale once you have found each other.

No. Skoot is not a vehicle marketplace, classified advertising site, dealership or car-buying service.

You do not use Skoot to find a car, buyer or seller. You use Skoot once you have found the other party and want a safer way to complete the sale.

No. Skoot does not buy cars, value cars, sell cars or source vehicles.

Skoot helps private buyers and sellers complete the transaction once they have agreed a sale.

Yes. Skoot is designed for private buyers and sellers who have already found each other.

All you need to start a transaction is the vehicle registration number, the agreed price and the other party’s email address.

Skoot is designed for UK residents aged 18 or over who are buying or selling a UK-registered car, motorbike or motorhome privately. It is not for motor traders, businesses or anyone acting on behalf of somebody else.

Both buyer and seller need a valid form of UK government-issued photographic ID, a UK bank account they can use for the transaction and the legal right to buy or sell the vehicle.

Skoot is intended for occasional private use.

Yes. Skoot can be used for private sales involving cars, motorbikes and motorhomes.

The process starts with the vehicle registration number, so both parties should check that the vehicle details retrieved by Skoot match the vehicle being bought or sold.

A bank transfer only moves money. It does not verify who you are dealing with, manage handover, keep the seller’s bank details private or create the transaction documents.

With Skoot, the buyer transfers payment before collection day, giving time for daily banking limits, bank checks and transfer delays to be dealt with before handover.

The seller is told once the money is with Skoot, so they are not relying on a same-day bank transfer, screenshot or pending-payment message before releasing the vehicle.

Skoot also guides both sides through identity verification, payment, documents and completion.

Skoot provides an escrow-style payment process for private vehicle sales.

In simple terms, the buyer transfers money to their Skoot wallet before handover. Once the sale is complete, the agreed payment is sent to the seller.

This helps both parties avoid relying on a large same-day bank transfer at handover.

No. Skoot is currently designed for UK private vehicle sales involving UK residents and UK-registered vehicles.

It is not currently available for international vehicle purchases, overseas buyers or sellers, or vehicles registered outside the UK.
